Today’s FitBeauty topic centers around those tiny amber bottles of fragrant oils that you may have noticed while browsing your local health store. What I’m talking about are essential oils, which just so happen to play a starring role in the 2 big A’s of healthy hair growth – Aromatherapy and Ayurveda.
In a nutshell, both aromatherapy and Ayurveda are simply practices that emphasize a more natural and “holistic” approach to haircare, and hands down, one of the best things about practicing principles of aromatherapy and Ayurveda is that it can be easily incorporated into your existing haircare or beauty regimen – such as simply adding a few drops of teal tree oil to your shampoo as a remedy for dandruff, or using tea rinses to naturally lighten or darken hair. In fact, some of my favorite essential oils and Ayurvedic herbs include: peppermint, rosemary, nettle and hibiscus.
Fun FitBeauty Fact: A study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that hibiscus can help promote hair growth!
Here are a few more essential oils and their beauty uses/benefits:
Promotes growth by stimulating circulation
Fine to normal hair
Gives golden highlights and sheen
Soothes inflamed scalp
Helps scaly scalps and psoriasis
Normalizes dry and oily scalp
Stimulates scalp and hair follicles
Used to treat hair loss and dandruff
Antiseptic and astringent

Treatment for dry scalp and dandruff
Helps balance natural scalp oils
And the fun doesn’t stop there! Truth be told, there are quite a few essential oils and Ayurvedic herbs that can do wonders for the health of your scalp and hair. For example, the 2 additional essential oils I mention in the video below – peppermint and rosemary – are two very popular essential oils that can help stimulate hair follicles, which will then promote healthy hair growth.
So those are the 7 essential oils you may want to add to your beauty arsenal (if you haven’t already!), and if you’d like a more detailed guide about essential oils and Ayurveda for hair growth, definitely check out my bestselling haircare book, If You Love It, It Will Grow.
Bottom line, if you’re looking to step up the health of your hair and scalp, it definitely won’t hurt to thrown a little aromatherapy and Ayurveda in the mix!
Peace, love & healthy living!
